On National Women’s Health and Fitness Day, it’s important to celebrate the lifestyle choices we as women make to remain fit and healthy. But it’s also a good time to talk about living that healthy lifestyle in a way that’s safe. One key way to live healthy is to exercise. And while it would be great to live in a world where women didn’t need to worry about their safety while exercising. But that’s simply not reality.

Running Safety

women Safety Tips on fitness day

Running is one sport that puts women at a particular risk, due to the fact that many runners run outdoors. Often times, they run alone as well. Unfortunately, female runners face harassment and fear for their safety on a daily basis when exercising.

According to Fitness magazine’s reporter Faith Brar, 60% of female runners report being harassed during runs. This harassment could take different forms, from being followed, to having someone make unwanted sexual comments or advances. In fact, Brar also indicates that 30% of women had been followed at one point by someone in a car, on a bike, or on foot.

Sadly, another study reveals that 11% of female runners choose to work out at a gym because of fear.  Doing what they love isn’t an option. They feel that their only alternative is to work out indoors.

Safety: Not Just an Issue For Runners

Running isn’t the only form of exercise that puts women at risk. Even walking outside alone can make someone a target for harassment – or worse. Hiking is another activity that many women enjoy – yet they may fear doing this alone.

Going to the gym isn’t always the solution, either. While you may feel safer once you’re inside, what about entering and exiting? Many people exercise after work. You may be walking to your car by yourself, after dark, and perhaps to a deserted parking garage.

No matter what form of exercise you enjoy as a woman, you shouldn’t have to stop exercising. You do not need to skip the outdoor workouts you love because of fear.

Silent Beacon is here for you. As the premier provider of women’s personal safety devices for runners, Silent Beacon celebrates women – and remains committed to keeping them safe.

Womens Health and fitness safety panic button

Silent Beacon has created a revolutionary personal safety device that provides peace of mind for all women – no matter the fitness activity. The Beacon is a lightweight, portable safety device that you can clip on your keychain. You can drop it in your purse or gym bag, or wear on a lanyard.

Best Women Safety Device in the Market

As one of the best female safety devices on the market, the Silent Beacon pairs with the free women’s safety app. Then, in the event of an emergency, the user presses the button. The device communicates with the app, allowing the user’s contact list to be alerted. These alerts can take the form of phone calls, texts, emails, or all three. The contacts don’t need to only include friends and family, either. With Silent Beacon, emergency personnel can be on the user’s contact list as well.

Some women’s safety devices require extra fees for activation or cancellation. And some companies require you to commit to recurring charges for their services. Not with Silent Beacon. The affordably priced $99 women’s safety device is the only price you pay for instant access to these amazing features:

  • Two-way communication
  • Live tracking via GPS technology
  • Lost device finding capability
  • Rechargeable battery
  • Silent alert mode
  • Customizable alerts
  • Non-emergency “nudge” mode

What Else Can I Do, As A Woman, To Stay Safe When I Exercise?

Besides carrying the Silent Beacon with you wherever you go, check out these safety tips for exercising alone. While you can’t always prevent an accident or emergency, following these women’s safety tips may increase your odds of staying safe:

  • Make sure others know you are working out: Let’s say you’re planning to take your dog out for a quick jog around your neighborhood. Let someone in your household or a neighbor know when you’re leaving, the route you’ll take, and when you will return. If you don’t return at the designated time, your concerned friends will need to look out for Silent Beacon alert.
  • Choose your workout times strategically: If you know that the park where you love to jog is well-populated right after work then run in the afternoon. The more people surrounding you, the better your chances of not becoming a victim of harassment or an attack. Of course, daylight hours are typically considered the safest times to work out – especially when you’re alone.

Be aware of your surroundings:

If you wear headphones while working out, you may be putting yourself at risk. It’s much easier for someone to follow you or approach you without your realizing it if you’re distracted by your music or podcast. Plus, your hearing is impaired, putting you at an additional risk for being hit by an approaching vehicle that you cannot hear.

Ditch the headset for your solitary exercise sessions and enjoy the sounds of nature instead. You’ll be able to hear anything and anyone that may be approaching. This will be allowing you time to prepare and to press the alert on the Beacon.

In honor of National Women’s Health and Fitness Day, here’s to you and your health. Remember to carry your female safety device Silent Beacon with you. So you can exercise safely and with the peace of mind, you deserve.
